Keynote Talks

It is with great pleasure we announce that two distinguished scholars will give keynote talks during the event. Prof. Maria Attard of the Department of Geography and the Director of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development, University of Malta, and Dr. Claire Ellul of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, University College London.
Prof. Maria Attard is member of the Department of Geography within the Faculty of Arts and the Director of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development at the University of Malta. She is a transport geographer and specializes in urban transport, policy and project mplementation. She has also coordinated the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Laboratory at the University of Malta for over 14 years and has subsequently published in the field of GIS education and more recently presented work on Voluntary Geographic Information (VGI) and Transport. She was a consultant to Government between 2002 and 2009 in transport strategy and policy and encouraged the use of GIS for projects and data management within Government. She studied at the University of Malta and completed her PhD in 2006 at UCL and has published over 20 journal articles and book chapters in the areas of urban transport policy, GIS and human geography. She has contributed over 55 presentations in conferences and proceedings. Prof. Attard is currently the co-chair of Cluster 2 of NECTAR (Network on European Communications and Transport Activities Research) and co-chair of SIG G3 of the World Conference for Transport Research Society (WCTRS). She is a Management Committee Member of the COST Action European Network Exploring Research into Geospatial Information Crowdsourcing (ENERGIC). She has coordinated research events and is currently involved in a number of funded projects, is a reviewer on a number of international journals and has recently edited a book on sustainable urban mobility. She regularly contributes to local debates on geographic information, sustainability and transport.
Dr. Claire Ellul worked as a GIS consultant for 10 years in the UK, Europe and the Middle East before returning to academia. Having completed her PhD at University College London in 2007, she spent two years working as a post-doctoral researcher before being appointed to a Lectureship in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at UCL. She is now a Reader in Geographical Information Science, with research interests that include 3D GIS and the usability of GIS software and data by non-GIS experts including the ‘crowd’ (see: http://iris.ucl.ac.uk/iris/browse/profile?upi=CDELL82). She is also Chief Technical Officer at the UCL spin-out company Mapping for Change, which specializes in Community Mapping (www.mappingforchange.org.uk).
